Bingo! not so…..

Saturday, December 27th, 2008

Group 11009 has shown on the Sun. It looks like the SSN may be as high as 23 by the end of the day, if that second group right behind gets counted (or keeps growing). The only downside is a big Coronal Hole straight on axis at Earth, which may put a damper on things.
P.S. […]

Here comes the Sun… it’s alright

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

SoHO MDI, EIT imager and STEREO Behind all confirm that group 11009 is coming around the Eastern limb of the Sun. EIT is showing ‘flaring’ around the limb and STEREO shows two very strong spots from it’s view at 45 degrees from straight-on. Soooo, look for some potential action late on 26th Dec or into […]

Fitting in……

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

I’ve been watching the chatter about the CA antenna case. Yes, the one that limits the antenna to one inch (25mm) above the top of the roof.
There’re always a few ways to handle this. Don’t aggravate the neighbours in the first place. Start out by keeping your power down so that there can’t be RFI […]

“Freebies”

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

Well, not quite, but nearly. Ever wondered how to get one of those stamps used on QSL cards that says “Verified by….”? Well, go to good old Vistaprint and check out their free rubber stamps. Play with the format and then order red ink (extra $1.99) so that photocopies don’t work, add slow delivery […]

STEREO gets interesting

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

Just after the STEREO mission came live, I wasn’t very impressed. I even sent away for some free (as in beer) 3D viewing glasses. The problem was that the data was very patchy and there were a very limited number of far-from-real-time 3D images.
However, STEREO is much more interesting than that. By viewing the B […]

Talking of companies….

Friday, December 12th, 2008

Incidentally, I wasn’t at all suggesting that Ten-Tec or Elecraft might be in trouble in my last post. However, I’m sure there are going to be some mighty good sales, especially online, from some of the manufacturers and dealers. I see West Mountain Radio have gone this route and T-T had a sale on the […]

USA companies……

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

I fear that we are about to see GM and Chrysler disappear in the next 24 to 72 hours. This is due mainly to GMAC (which is owned by GM and Cerebus [Chrysler]) not being able to become a bank.
Let’s put this out into “Hamville”. Can Ten-Tec and Elecraft survive the crash in USA […]

A new suit….

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

An interesting post, along with the links given to other blogs. Most, if not all, ham clubs would do well to read this and look at themselves in the mirror. As for “mode diversity”, that’s where I stumble these days, because CW is just my “thing”. I know I can run an SSB pile-up, or […]

ISO Date and Time

Monday, December 8th, 2008

Yes, yes, yes! JE1TRV hits the nail on the head. I’ve been almost nuts about using the ISO standard for some time now. It’s used in all programming and a bunch of other stuff, yet the world goes around talking in MM/DD/YYYY, DD/MM/YYYY dates and am/pm times. Let’s set an example by “making the move”. […]

FOC Orlando Dinner

Monday, December 8th, 2008

Well, we got back safely from Orlando. What a nice weekend. I don’t intentionally want to use the blog to force FOC down anybody’s throat, but once again the “specialness” of the Club shined through. Great venue, super friends and a good dinner. Down side: fighting Microsoft Media Player and XP when trying to play […]
